Jim Mercik & Alvin Carter Sr.
Kent Aldrich
Roaring Brook presents three highly-talented musicians who will perform a superb split-bill concert for you tonight. Singer-songwriter-guitarist, Kent Aldrich leads off with a generous selection of songs from his rich roots music repertoire and stellar cd, Thanks For Asking. Dave Van Ronk was so impressed upon hearing Kent perform his original songs, “Just One Line,” “That Old Moon” and “Pictures & Memories” that he urged him to record them immediately! You’ll enjoy his poignant playing and vocals and his offbeat humor as you join him on his audience participation songs, “Giants” and “Nobody Leaves East Hampton.”
Songwriter-guitarist Jim Mercik has accompanied Eric Andersen, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Bruce Pratt and Hugh Blumenfeld, he was a member of The Roadbirds, The Strange Rangers and The Congo Square Ramblers and studied guitar with Dave Van Ronk. Singing and playing acoustic, resophonic guitars and banjo, he covers music from Delta Blues to songs by Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter and Tom Waits. Performing with Jim is the amazing percussionist “Abu” Alvin Carter. His enthusiasm for music, life and peace is unquenchable. Patriarch of a percussion-playing family, he was honored with a “Celebration of Abu” night at RAW in 2010. Abu’s masterful lead and support drumming and his radiant good-vibe personality make every performance memorable. Song highlights may include “Buddy Bolden’s Blues,” “Buckets of Rain,” “St. James Infirmary” and Jim’s original “Is This Enough For You?” found in The Smithsonian Folkways Collection

Pat Donohue is the most multiply-talented artist that Roaring Brook has ever presented! He is an extraordinary guitarist, songwriter, singer, arranger, solo and band performer with 14 recordings to his credit, his latest, Vicksburg Blues is a collaboration with pianist Butch Thompson. Joyce Andersen
Singer-fiddler-songwriter Joyce Andersen played our most memorable show of 2012. Her solo electro-acoustic fiddle troubadour project as heard on her 5th solo album, Swerve has to be seen live to be believed! Her beautiful, expressive singing matches her playing artistry on violin, viola and 8-string Norwegian Hardanger fiddle that combines bowed, plucked and strummed techniques. Sometimes she supports this with double foot percussion. By encore time, her talent and versatility told us that she could sit in with Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, The Chieftains, Loretta Lynn or Led Zeppelin. Before she left RBNC, we asked her back to play a few Celtic selections for St. Patrick's Day and then follow her influences that include a range of styles from bluegrass to blues, the mountain singing of Ralph Stanley, jazz standards, gospel, ballads and blistering rock & roll. On the latter, she deftly manages an array of hi-tech stage gear, creating a one woman-made wall of sound. You will enjoy her original songs "Yearning," "Heartbreak" "I Will Shine" and "Get Your Swerve On." Joyce also puts her own spin on "Don't Explain," "Higher Love," "Dream a Little Dream," "Hey Joe" and "Magic Carpet Ride."

Ed Gerhard
Grammy Award-winning guitarist Ed Gerhard returns with his immaculate tone and "singing guitar" style to perform tunes from his phenomenal new studio album, There and Gone. With his original works "On a Pennsylvania Hill," "Kept Walking" and "Brothers," he is a reflective impressionist, suggesting loss and remembrance, change and discovery and paying tribute through celebration. It's always great to hear melodies we know well take on new life through Ed's interpretive talent. Breathtaking examples from There and Gone include "Heart Like A Wheel," "Killing the Blues," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and his marvelous medley of "Imagine/ Across the Universe." His fingerstyle playing of 6 and 12-string and Hawaiian lap style and blues slide guitars has made him a favorite at festivals in North America, Ireland, Europe and Japan.
